5 ways you didn’t know massage can improve your sports performance

1. Improved flexibility and mobility.

Flexibility or limberness refers to the absolute range of movement in a joint or series of joints, and length in muscle.

Mobility: This refers to how freely a joint can move throughout its full range of motion.

Proper flexibility is essential in many sports and / or is a great advantage in many others. For example, you wouldn’t be able to do gymnastics or weight lifting or even swimming well without the flexibility in your shoulders, lower back or hips, however you still could cycle or run – although with restrictions, which would eventually lead to overuse and even injury most likely. This is where SPORTS MASSAGE comes in – it can stretch muscles that could not be stretched in the usual ways (i. e. some of the rotator cuff muscles – subscapularis or knots on the pec muscles). Muscle fibres are stretched sideways and lengthways, massage can also stretch / loosen myofascia that surrounds muscles and muscle fibres – releasing any pressure or tension build up.

2. Increase tissue permeability

Basically it’s just an increase in fluid movement in and out of the tissue – this increases delivery of nutrients and oxygen to the cells and flushes out toxins – thus accelerates recovery significantly.

3. Break down scar tissue & increase tissue elasticity

Exercises lead to muscle tissue tearing and damage, which causes scar tissue – deep tissue sports massage breaks those scar tissue adhesions removing intrinsic resistance and improving elasticity and performance.

4. Prevention and relief of DOMS

DOMS – Delayed Onset of Muscle Soreness… If you do squats you know what I mean, two, three days after your heavy work out – you start feeling really, really sore.

Well the good news is that Sports Remedial Massage can prevent / decrease severity of that, and help the relieve it if you already have DOMS.

5. Pain reduction and relaxation

Trough repetitive, long strokes and heat generated in Sports Massage we can numb painful areas and cause localized and overall feeling of relaxation. Heat and touch will cause production of hormones and neurotransmitters responsible for muscle and nervous system relaxation.

There are many more ways Sports Remedial Massage can help you and we can go into very specific details about them, yet reading will not really ease the muscle tension.

Why don’t you give us a call and tell us your sport, your goals and need and we will work out the treatment program best for you.

What do we do and how do we do it ?

Sports and Remedial Massage can help treat many different musculoskeletal problems, pains, aches, and conditions – from foot problems such as Plantar Fasciitis (inflammation of the fascia under the foot) or Achilles Tendonitis ( inflammation of the tendon connecting calf muscle to the heel of the foot) to helping people get back on track after knee reconstruction (when ACL ligament is created from part of the hamstring muscle) to pulled hammie (so often seen in footy players and track and field athletes), then we also treat tight hip flexors ( those nasty Iliopsoas muscles) as they cause back pain relief as well as better leg mobility and Sciatica ( where Sciatic nerve gets compressed -sending pain to buttock and down the back of the leg). Moving up the body we can help you if you have Frozen Shoulder, Golfer’s Elbow, Tennis Elbow (both are inflammation of the muscles attached above the elbow) and finally we look after people’s necks – wry necks, whiplashes, tight necks from desk work, sore neck from MMA, jiu-jitsu, weightlifting, working…

Depending on the complaint, area, function and many other factors we might use Deep Tissue Massage Techniques to get into deeper layers of the muscles, or we might do Myofascial Releases to help align the fascia that surrounds the muscles and other tissues, we can also Trigger Point the knots and deactivate them – causing immediate release of those points, and if they are deep or you prefer us to we are also experienced in Dry Needling Treatments (where by using acupuncture needles we deactivate hypersensitive areas).

Apart from strictly Remedial / Therapeutic Massages we also offer Pregnancy Massage – which is still Remedial, however modified for the needs of mums-to- be. And finally we do offer Hot Stone Therapy. Perfected by Kasia – Hot Stone Massage with the use of Aromatherapy Oils is a great experience – it could be done in a heavier manner more towards remedial or in a purely gentle way as a pampering gift to a loved one or yourself.

So there is here something for everyone and if you didn’t find information you were looking for simply give us a call, a text or email and we will be happy to discuss your needs.
